Thread was a collectively produced (mostly by students) print publication at and around Duke University from 2003-2005. The group of people involved in its production (including writing, editing, layout, publicity, and distribution) were known as the Thread Collective. The collective was organized around consensus-based decision making and open participation.

Mission Statement

The following statement was decided on at the outset and outlines the basic organizing principles behind the Thread Collective:

Thread is a publication dedicated to social justice issues relevant to campus, local, national, and global communities. Thread is designed, written, and published by an open collective of individuals committed to media activism. We aim to create an outlet for leftist voices on campus, and to raise awareness of current and pressing issues.
