Welcome to my (Ben Crawford's) Wikidaritas user page!

I set up Wikidaritas both to play around on and to be a usable wikispace for progressive (or whatever) activities. If you're just poking around, feel free to register and you can set up your own user page, etc.!

Wikidaritas runs on the MediaWiki software that Wikipedia runs on (though it's a slightly older version of the software because my webhost isn't running PHP 5). It's pretty easy to set up, and once you've got it going, really easy to use.

Eventually, I will have more thoughtful information here about my artistic/political ideas and activities. For the time being, I'm using the space as a convenient way of organizing information.

I've been involved with several progressive groups over the years, including Duke Students Against Sweatshops, Thread, and most recently Students United for a Responsible Global Environment (SURGE).

Dissertation Study #4 (2008)

Movement I

The first movement is the only movement in which time is (fairly) strictly laid out. The violin is the lead instrument; viola and cello are the accompaniment. However, the accompaniment is multi-layered (so, Dan and Brian, you'll have multiple staves in your parts). The idea is that the texture of the accompaniment is variable; however, as you'll see, the different layers are really just variations of each other, so it should be fairly straightforward to switch between layers as needed.

At rehearsal letter h, the violin has solo passages punctuated by chords in the viola/cello. Please note, Sarah, that the timing here should sort of "fade into looseness" - the tempo can slow down as well. Sort of work your way into "unmetered", I guess.

Ok. Sorry for the delay. The other parts will be done soon... Also, I formatted the parts for 11x17 (but actually 11x14) - I was going to wait until all the parts were done to make bound versions, but if you'd like me to print them out now, I certainly will.

Here you go:

Sounds controlled by the Wiimote

...being the controller (one of which I own) for the Wii (which I do not). I'm currently using a Bluetooth dongle (Targus brand - my old busted laptop ain't got it internal) to communicate between computer and Wiimote, some free software called GlovePIE (which isn't legal to use in Israel until the occupation ends!) to communicate between the Bluetooth data and OSC (Open Sound Control) protocol messages, which I'm broadcasting via UDP to... my same computer. The OSC messages are then recieved in Max/MSP (I'd rather use Pure Data, of course, but can't get its ASIO interface working worth a damn...), where I then use them to affect synthesis/real-time processing. YUP.

That's a Fragment of a Complex Molecule

I'm working with a group comprised of Benito (me), The Nein (my roommate's band), and the saxophonist Crowmeat Bob. We did a structured-improv ditty at the Duke Graduate Composers' Concert on April 14...
