Lectures

April 8: Steve Reich

  • Please read the following article by John Roeder: "Beat-Class Modulation in Steve Reich's Music"
  • Please listen/look at the score for the following pieces:
    • New York Counterpoint (1985)
    • Come Out (1966)
      • mp3
      • Recording on Reserve: CD 5756
    • Piano Phase (1967)
      • Score seems to be missing... However, you can get an idea of the score by reading the Wikipedia entry on the piece, and by checking out the score to Violin Phase (M42.R44 1979, also on reserve) that is a slightly more complicated application of a similar process
      • mp3
      • Recording on Reserve: CD 5756
    • Clapping Music (1972)
      • Score SHOULD be on reserve: M298.R45 C537 1980
      • Recording on Reserve: CD 5756
  • Please also read an intro to Steve Reich, for instance the the one on Wikipedia

NOTE: It seems as though the library has managed to lose the CD 5756 with Piano Phase, Come Out, and Clapping Music; I'll try to get recordings of some or all of these online, but I won't be able until tonight. Maybe the library will have found it if you come in this evening- who can tell with our beloved little media center?

April 10: Gyorgy Ligeti
